Nice to Meet You: Nicole Miller

Updated: Jun 21

The American Red Cross collects 40 percent of the nation's blood supply. This means that volunteers across the country need to roll up their sleeves every day in order to maintain a healthy blood supply for those who need it. Nicole Miller is one of the biomedical account managers in our Nebraska-Iowa Region, and her work helps make our blood collection mission possible. She answered a few questions about her role at the Red Cross and what she enjoys about her position.

Q: Could you explain what your title means and take us through your work day, or what projects you work on?

A: My title of Account Manager means I work with our blood drive accounts and Blood Program Leaders to schedule and host successful blood drives. I spend some of my day on the computer sending and answering emails, scheduling blood drives and creating marketing materials. I also spend time talking to Blood Program Leaders, attending meetings and blood drives. Plus, a lot more!

Q: How long have you been with the Red Cross? Is this your first position with the Red Cross? If not, what was it?

A: I have been with the Red Cross for seven years.

Q: What do you like about your work?

A: I like all aspects of my job! No day is the same. The variety of my job and meeting a lot of people who are passionate about helping patients in need makes my job fun!

Q: What do you like to listen to during the work day?

A: I ask Alexa to play music and whatever comes on, I’ll listen to. It’s usually a mix of county, today's hits and rap.

Q: In what part of the region are you located, and what do you enjoy about your community?

A: I live in Dubuque, the eastern side of Iowa. I love that we’re a river town with plenty of activities to do in and around the area.

Q: How do you spend your time when you aren’t working?

A: Keeping up with my three young kids! Sports, playing outside, going to farmer’s markets in the summer. And we're always up for a new adventure.

Q: What has most surprised you while working for the Red Cross?

A: What has surprised me the most is that people are unaware of all the services that we provide throughout the country. I’m always happy to share everything the Red Cross does and how we have likely made a positive impact on someone they know.

Q: What is a Red Cross moment that sticks with you?

A: Every blood drive I get to attend sticks with me. From the Blood Program Leaders, volunteers and donors, they’re all happy to support the Red Cross. It’s also wonderful to hear from them that our staff are rock stars. One Red Cross, One Mission!
